Positive Behaviour for Learning framework for schools

On this page

A Positive Behaviour for Learning school-wide framework is being implemented in selected ºÚÁϳԹÏn government schools.

Positive Behaviour for Learning is an evidence-based framework that supports improved learning and behaviour outcomes for students. It has been implemented in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Schools work with their staff, students and community to adapt the framework to their unique local context. This can include:

  • identifying the values of the school community
  • defining and explicitly teaching the expected behaviours and routines for school
  • reviewing data so all students receive appropriate levels of support when needed
  • using evidence-based teaching practices
  • using consistent language and approaches to teaching and learning
  • consulting with the school community for annual input and review
  • continually reviewing and enhancing what equity and inclusion looks like at school.

The benefits of Positive Behaviour for Learning

School-wide Positive Behaviour for Learning helps to improve learning, wellbeing and behaviour outcomes for children and young people. It helps everyone in the school community by:

  • teaching all students about respectful and positive behaviour
  • maximising teaching time and improving student engagement in learning
  • supporting teacher wellbeing
  • promoting positive, safe and supportive learning environments.

Selected schools implement Positive Behaviour for Learning

Since 2022, 39 ºÚÁϳԹÏn public schools have been adapting and implementing the Positive Behaviour for Learning framework. Schools receive support from the Department for Education over 3 years, including:

  • Positive Behaviour for Learning training
  • staff coaching
  • implementation guidance
  • data collection and analysis support
  • resource development.

In 2025, 16 additional schools will start Positive Behaviour for Learning training and receive support from the department to implement the framework in their local community context.

Evaluation of the Positive Behaviour for Learning framework

Annual monitoring and evaluation will assess the implementation and impact of Positive Behaviour for Learning in the ºÚÁϳԹÏn context.

The 2024 preliminary evaluation report showed:

  • the framework is supporting schools to make positive progress in their local context
  • Positive Behaviour for Learning aligns with the needs of students
  • schools benefited from the Positive Behaviour for Learning training sessions and coaching support
  • the framework is flexible and adaptable allowing schools to embed existing evidence-based practices.
